2020: The Year of 5G? There is so much buzz about 5G these days, but what does it all mean for businesses and personal use? This session will attempt to answer these and many of the following questions we all pondering these days:
- Every carrier is promising large roll-outs of 5G. Which technology will win out?
- What types of infrastructure will need to be deployed by the carriers?
- Which spectrums are best and what will coverage look like?
- Will 5G be limited to dense urban areas?
- Can fixed wireless 5G eliminate the need for fiber-based enterprise network connections?
- What will 5G look like in other countries?
- What are the greatest risks both in deployment and for personal health?
We will hear from a panel of industry experts to sort this out, provide an overview of where the industry is headed, and what your IT strategy for 5G should look like in 2020 and beyond.

Michael Q. Cannon - Chief Technology Officer of Stafford County, Virginia
Mike has over 30 years of information technology management experience. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer of Stafford County, Virginia, where his team of 20 IT professionals supports a community of 150,000 residents and 1,000 users. One of his major initiatives is a public private partnership for Stafford with the Center For Innovative Technologies and OST to build the first of it's kind Smart Community in Virginia. Previously, Mike was an independent consultant providing services to local governments throughout the US. Mike also served as the CIO of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the City of Rockville, MD. Additionally, his nonprofit experience includes the Travel Industry Association and the Council on Foundations. Outside of his C-Level IT roles, he currently serves on the board of the Society for Information Capital Area Chapter responsible for programs and is a member of two regional CIO groups, COGCIO for the national capital region and VALGITE Virginia Local Government IT executives.

Thomas Steegmann is a Principal Architect for AT&T Public Sector Solutions supporting the mid-Atlantic region. Tom has been in the telecommunications industry for 20+ years, focused on next generation, enterprise solutions encompassing data communications and complex integration across multiple environments. Tom is currently focused on helping his Government customers modernize their workforce and infrastructure via mobility and cloud technologies, including 5G, IOT, and Smart Cities.
Nicholas Nilan - Director of Product Development for Public Sector at Verizon
Nicholas Nilan is the Director of Product Development for Public Sector at Verizon. He is responsible for the development and deployment lifecycle of innovative and mission impacting products and solutions for Federal, State and Local, and Education customers. Previously, he led Federal Marketing strategy at Verizon, and before that, engineering teams supporting mobility and Internet of Things deployments in the Department of Defense. He has been in the telecommunications industry for over 16 years and holds an MBA in Finance and Accounting from Regis University and an undergraduate degree in Political Science from York College of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he is on the Board of Directors for AFCEA DC. |
