Tales from the Trenches - The Journey to CIO

Wednesday November 10th | 4:00 PM

Join us at our next "Tales from the Trenches" meeting--an intimate conversation with two eminent local CIOs comparing notes and sharing their experiences as they transitioned to the CIO role from their "Number 2" positions.  "Tales from the Trenches" sessions are unscripted but some of the topics we hope to hear about are:

  • How they arrived at the CIO role -- was it their personal career plan, and how much serendipity played a factor?
  • Having been the right-hand person to a CIO in their previous roles, what did they not expect, was there anything they didn't feel fully prepared for?
  • How as the nature of their relationships with both stakeholders and their own teams changed?
  • How as the "C" part of their title changed their responsibilities, and their perspectives on what is expected of the IT leader?
  • And anything else they can think of, or you want to ask

Ransomware What's a CIO to do?

Wednesday, September 8, 2021

Event recap

Breaches keep happening, the outcomes are getting worse and we keep doing the same thing. The state of ransomware has reached epidemic proportions. Now we are shutting down pipelines, utilities and hospital systems. Over half of global organizations are under attack, with average ransom demands in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. How does this keep happening and what can we do to stop it?

Join us for a discussion with Ritesh Agrawal, CEO and Co-Founder of Airgap and Mel Reyes, CIO of Getaround.

As Airgap CEO, Ritesh drives the company’s strategy to accelerate adoption of a modern approach to security that embraces the emerging Zero Trust architecture. Ritesh brings to Airgap more than 20 years of experience across executive leadership, product management, customer support and sales functions with some of the world’s leading security and information technology companies.

At Getaround, Mel is responsible for IT and IT Security.  Over the course of his career he has served as CIO, CISO, Board Advisor, CIO Interim and Executive Consultant, and Executive coach to technology executives.

The event will be moderated by SIM SFBA Chapter Board Member, Sham Chatterjee

CEO's Expectations from CIO

Wednesday, March 10, 2021

Event recap – SIM SF Bay Area members and guests participated in an interactive panel discussion with David Politis andThomas Donnelly, respectively the CEO and CIO of BetterCloud.

BetterCloud is the leading SaaS Management Platform (SMP) that enables IT professionals to discover, manage and secure the growing stack of SaaS applications in the digital workplace. David and Thomas shared their perspectives on their roles and relationships to each other, the board, their IT users and customer base. Their discussion and responses to questions from our members touched on the following areas:

For tech (solutions) company
  • CIO's role as a user - involved in product management and support
  • CIO's role as a product evangelist - customer facing, with KPIs tied to that role
For all companies
  • CIO's role being elevated to COO type of responsibility. Every process in companies are being automated, CIO is architect/owner of the technology supporting those processes
  • Evolution in traditional IT roles/responsibilities
  • Business analysts becoming functional relationship managers & product manager for the technology supporting other functions; earlier engagement of IT in the business product/application lifecycle
  • Importance of Enterprise PMO to improve coordination between business units and IT
  • To help move from tactical to strategic partner, establish business productivity success metrics and reinvest portion of resulting savings/value back into next strategic projects
  • CIO's relationship w/ Board of Directors – CEO has to support the IT agenda, help translating the IT roadmap/spend to the business objectives and KPIs that the board is focused on. Position IT leaders as driving growth/cutting costs, vs. owning a cost center
We thank David and Thomas for participating in such an engaging and informative conversation with our members!

How Leading Valley CISOs are securing Edge and IoT: The proliferation of IoT is driving deployment of other edge network resources including local and micro data centers, and traditional centralized security frameworks and solutions are struggling to keep up. Join us for an interactive panel discussion with two leading security practitioners to share their experiences and lessons learned in managing security in an increasingly more complex environment.

Panelists:
Jason Hengels, CEO Exposure Security
Curtis Simpson, CISO Armis
