Letter from SIMCAC Chair Mike Huthwaite, including a recap of this week's CxO Roundtable It's been a busy 2020 for SIMCAC, and we are just barely wrapping up February! This week, we hosted our first CxO Exclusive Roundtable, which was not only sold out, but also included a great discussion focused on cybersecurity.
Michael Weygandt graciously offered us the use of one of the many rooms in the Museum of the Bible, and I think we were all taken by surprise at the elegance of the space. I simply can't thank Michael and his staff enough for helping the event go off without a hitch. Fara Francis, a long time board member, eloquently moderated the discussion, and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Slalom for sponsoring us. We touched on so many aspects of what is impacting our organizations on the cybersecurity front, and the honesty and openness amongst the group was encouraging. I think we all walked away with a sense of relief that we are not alone in the fight, and the knowledge that we can count on each other for help and advice. As we move the chapter forward, based on the success we had this week, we are proud to announce that we are now looking to host these CxO roundtables on a quarterly basis as an added value to our members.
For those of you who were unable to attend this week's event, either because of conflict, or because you were not a C-suite member, fear not, because our Cybersecurity Summit is coming in April.
I am proud to say that our membership is continuing to grow year over year since 2017, and we are hoping to continue that trend. Growth in the chapter expands all of our inner circles of peers and opens each of us to new ideas, new possibilities, and new friendships. I am excited by this potential. If you know of peers in your organizations or other prospective eligible members, invite them to an event and register them as a guest (at no cost). We would love to see them and meet them.
As a SIM member myself for 15 years, I have made countless connections and friends, both locally and across the national organization. I have experienced great learning opportunities, been introduced to new technologies and trends, and received some of the soundest advice and lessons learned. We have a slate of great events scheduled for this year, and I hope to see as many of you as possible at them. If you haven't renewed your own membership yet, don't lose track of it...you don't want to lose your membership privileges!
I want to close with three minor asks of our chapter members. First, we are always looking for sponsors to help fund our events and our charitable outreach. If you know of any vendors that would be willing to engage with us, please reach out to Lawk Salih for more details. Second, we are always looking for committee volunteers to help with event planning, outreach programs, member recruitment, and many other activities. We are a completely volunteer organization, so every bit of help goes a long way. Last, but not least, we love feedback: about our programs, about this newsletter, and/or about any aspect of our chapter. This is your chapter, help shape it into the most valuable aspect of your career!

March Event: 5G - Unwiring Corporations & Communities
Join us on March 23rd at the Tower Club in Tyson's Corner from 5:30pm - 8:00pm, as we discuss "5G - Unwiring Corporations & Communities."
Is 2020 the Year of 5G? There is so much buzz about 5G these days, but what does it all mean for businesses and personal use? This session will attempt to answer these and many of the following questions we all pondering these days:
- Every carrier is promising large roll-outs of 5G. Which technology will win out?
- What types of infrastructure will need to be deployed by the carriers?
- Which spectrums are best and what will coverage look like?
- Will 5G be limited to dense urban areas?
- Can fixed wireless 5G eliminate the need for fiber-based enterprise network connections?
- What will 5G look like in other countries?
- What are the greatest risks both in deployment and for personal health?
We will hear from an industry expert to sort this out, provide an overview of where the industry is headed and what your IT strategy for 5G should look like in 2020 and beyond.
