Teen Tech Camp
Summer Series 2019
Upcoming Event

April 24, 2019

Teen Tech Camp is an annual week- long program produced by SIM Memphis in conjunction with various local partners.  The purpose of the camp is to help get young people excited about technology while they are still considering their future career opportunities – perhaps they will choose IT as a career path after participating in the camp!!  The camp is targeted at twelve to fifteen year olds and exposes kids to various careers in IT as well as introduces them to emerging technologies.  Campers who are selected pay nothing to attend.  The group is diverse and is comprised mostly of students from public schools.  Teen Tech Camp has been and remains our Memphis chapter signature Outreach program since 2005.

At the camp, the students learn to write apps for cell phones and tablets.  They also receive a presentation each of the five mornings of the business uses of technology focusing particularly on the classic “Order to Cash” process for a jump rope manufacturing company.  They learn about how critical technology is to the ordering, manufacturing, warehousing and delivery processes.  During these lectures, the students use bar code scanners to simulate each process and then they actually do the manufacturing of their jump ropes.

Below are the planned camps for the 2019 summer series. As SIM Members, you are invited to drop by any of these days to the camp to participate, observe and support the camp.  We are also in need of members to talk to the campers about their experiences as IT professionals, and give experiential stories for how fulfilling a carrier in the IT field is.

It started as 5 days in July one summer for 25 students in Memphis, and has now grown to 7 weeks for a total of 200 students in Memphis and Desoto County!! What a great opportunity to impact local STEM programs and future IT talent in our community!!

Can you join Ed and David for 2 hours one morning during each of the 2 Main Tech Camps (see *’s below) or come for lunch during one of the other Tech Camps?

The goal would be for you to share your IT career story.

  • Meet the 12 – 14 year old boys and girls
    • Feel some satisfaction by seeing and hearing their excitement as they gain “hands-on” experience thanks to our program.
  • How did you get into IT?
  • Why did you go this way?
  • What have been the biggest joys and satisfying times in your career?
