Eric Whaley, CIO, Wolseley Canada Inc.

Eric will take us through his journey on Engaging Talent for the new Paradigm of IT

As many companies have adopted a cloud/SaaS first strategy over the years, and as emerging technologies continue to evolve, there is an elevation of the importance of business experience skills within IT, and less emphasis on technical skills. IT providing business support has been a historical view in many companies in the past, but this has shifted to IT providing business value. The need for partnership is stronger than ever, and the distinction between the IT department from business and other functional areas is less obvious. This provides a necessity and an opportunity to redesign the IT organizational model. This also implies mindset changes in the organization, while opening the door for cross-functional career opportunities. Some of the things to consider are:

How do you apply this model and thinking in an organization

  • What are the benefits and what are the things to watch out for
  • How do you evolve your team, cultivate the team dynamics and people
  • How do you achieve balance between business skills and technical skills

To achieve value, organizations need to evolve with the market dynamics and leverage the opportunities.
