December 20th Newsletter

Welcome to the SIMCAC Weekly Newsletter....
....Where each week, we'll share SIMCAC announcements, member spotlights, local/national industry news, upcoming events, and recaps of past ones!

Not already a member?  What are you waiting for?

Unlike many of the event vendors that persistently target tech leaders in our area, we are the only professional association of senior technology leaders, run solely by volunteers, that offers a tight-knit community of peers, meaningful learning opportunities around hot topics, and the ability to make an impact through our STEM charitable foundation.  If you are a senior technology leader in the DC metro, please consider joining (our application is quick and painless).

Our chapter is rapidly growing and we have an ambitious agenda for 2020.  Come be a part of it!

2019 Year In Review: Continued Investment Continues To Pay Off!

In late 2017, the SIMCAC board met and approved a new vision and three-year strategy, designed to revitalize our chapter.  We spent 2019 continuing to execute that strategy, and it continues to pay off!  If you haven’t already reviewed our chapter's vision and strategy, we welcome and encourage you to take a look:

Major Chapter Accomplishments

Here are just a few examples of what we accomplished this year:
  • We doubled in size over the last 2 years, thanks to strong growth this year:  We are closing 2019 with 129 active members, adding 49 new members this year alone.
  • We continued to improve the quality of our programming, resulting in significant increases in meeting registration and attendance:  We continued to diversify our meeting locations and meeting formats, and delivered meaningful opportunities for peer learning around hot topics.  As a result, our meetings are now regularly attended by 50-80 senior technology leaders, which is approximately 45% higher relative to 2018.
  • We grew our sponsorship program:  We increased sponsorship revenue by 62% relative to 2018 while continuing to protect our membership from unwanted solicitation.  This revenue has been crucial to our efforts to close capability gaps, expand our offerings, and grow our charitable foundation.
  • We made a difference:  We donated a total of $10,000 in 2019 to 2 worthy organizations:  Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital and Year Up, National Capital Region.  In addition, several of our members invested their time and energy actively volunteering with our STEM partners.

2019 Events

In January, we were the first group in the area that brought together HQ2 deal leaders from Amazon, Arlington County, and Virginia Tech to discuss the impact of Amazon HQ2 on our region.

In March, smart city experts gave us a glimpse into the future, explaining how ubiquitous broadband and WiFi, IoT, AI, Machine Learning, and Big Data will transform our communities, becoming a $2 trillion industry by next year.

In April, in partnership with HMG Strategy, we hosted an all-day CIO summit packed with compelling content.

In May, we were joined by amazing speaker and SIM leader Kristen Lamoreaux, who focused on what it will take for leaders to become an effective Human CIO in the Digital Age.

In June, we hosted an impressive panel of STEM experts to explore the state of STEM investments and their impact on our workforce, taking the opportunity to support Girl Scouts, Nation’s Capital.

In July, SIM members and their significant others got together over great food paired with wines from around the world.

In August, chapter leaders and other interested members met, checked progress against our strategic plan, and drafted our programming calendar for 2020.

In September, a panel of thought leaders that are leveraging data to drive successful transformation initiatives shared their knowledge and best practices.  We also hosted our inaugural charity golf outing.

In October, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and welcomed Dr. David Bray, who led a discussion focused on what each of us, as positive change agents, should do to help ensure a future where IT advances are employed to uplift communities and societies around the world.

In November, we hosted our second annual SIMCAC Executive Women Leadership event, where a panel discussed how aspiring leaders can overcome challenges to find optimal roles and support to achieve success.

In December, we once again put our money to work through a donation to Year Up, while connecting over drinks and great food at the National Press Club in DC.

Happy Holidays from SIMCAC!  Looking forward to seeing you in 2020!
