SIMCAC Recap: 5G- Unwiring Corporations & Communities
This past Monday, SIMCAC held our third event of 2020 (as a webinar), which focused on 5G and its impact on corporations and communities.
After an opening by our Chairman, our very own Mike Cannon (CTO of Stafford County) moderated a panel of distinguished representatives from two of the country's largest carriers: Nick Nilan from Verizon and Thomas Steegman from AT&T. Both Mr. Nilan and Mr. Steegman talked in depth about 5G's technical capabilities, it's current state, and differences from existing 4G and LTE networks. In short, 5G will play a crucial role in the network of tomorrow, where high bandwidth will be required to support autonomous driving, smart cities, air fiber networks, and more.
Mr. Nilan and Mr. Steegman also shared their companies 5G roadmaps and entertained questions about the future of 5G, current network usage, and COVID-19 impacts on the network.
5G is being acclaimed as the fourth industrial revolution. Just as steam power led a revolution in the 18th century, electricity in the 19th century, and information technology in the 20th century, cyber physical systems powered by 5G are on the verge of revolutionizing the 21st century. These systems will be capable of computing on the edge with greater reliability. Machines will begin doing both mental and physical work with greater autonomy, allowing potentially unimaginable gains in productivity.
As usual, we had a heavy turnout of current and eligible prospective members who all called in to the webinar. In closing, we learned a lot from the two experts and had a lively Q&A session afterwards. I think it's safe to say our March event was a runaway success.
