Membership Categories
Members fall into one of four categories: Practitioner, Academic, Consultant/Vendor, or Other Leader.
-
Practitioner: Senior IT/IM leaders (e.g., CIOs, CTOs, direct reports, retired Senior IT/IM leaders, and other leaders) whose primary role is not selling IT products or services.
-
Academic: Full-time faculty advancing the IS/IT profession through research, curriculum, or academic leadership.
-
Consultant/Vendor: Partner/principal-level leaders primarily focused on delivering services/products (not primarily selling).
-
Other Leaders: Senior non-IT executives who influence strategic technology direction.
Practitioner Majority & No-Selling Standard
To protect the IT executive, practitioner-led environment, at least 75% of SIM SC members are Practitioners. SIM SC maintains a strict no-selling / no-marketing policy at events unless explicitly authorized.
Members in Transition
Members between roles may remain active for up to one year with dues waived, consistent with chapter guidelines (standard event fees may apply). Continuation beyond one year is at the Board’s discretion.
Additional Provisions (Brief)
Emeritus status may be granted to retired members. Renewals are Board-reviewed. Chapter transfers and RLF graduates receive streamlined acceptance when eligibility remains unchanged.
